Our two-week Kimberley trip: Part 3

Nestled in the heart of the Kimberley, El Questro is an adventurer’s paradise with rugged landscapes, cascading waterfalls, and epic outback experiences.

And we had a great time – even though it was school holidays (we didn’t realise we’d booked at such a busy time).

The Kimberley trip to date was leading up to four full days at El Questro Station seeking off-road thrills, serene swimming holes, and a taste of local culture.

Read our guide that covers our top 10 things to do at El Questro – plus a special section on the iconic Gibb River Road (the small part that we were able to do in our two week trip from Cairns, Queensland into WA and the Kimberley!).

Read part 1 here and part 2 here.

1. Chase waterfalls

El Questro is home to some of the most stunning waterfalls in the Kimberley. Emma Gorge is a must visit, with its towering cliffs and refreshing (albeit absolutely freezing) plunge pool.

For a more secluded spot, hike to El Questro Gorge, where a cool swim awaits after a scenic trek through lush monsoon forests.

This was one of our favourites. We didn’t get to the top but happily stayed at the bottom pool.

2. Take on the 4x4 tracks

Adventurous drivers will love El Questro’s challenging off-road tracks.

Conquer the water crossings and rocky terrain of the Explosion Gorge Track or test your skills on the track to Branco’s Lookout for breathtaking sunset views over the Pentecost River.

We drove the steep track up to Branco’s Lookout; absolutely stunning and completely worth it because it’s so close to the station.

3. Enjoy dinner at The Steakhouse restaurant

After a day of exploring, indulge in a delicious meal at the El Questro Station Restaurant. Couldn’t fault the meal or service – and the wine! It was a welcome treat after days of hiking and exerting energy. You might need to book ahead – even before you get there. We almost didn’t get in and had to take a late booking.

4. Relax at the Swinging Arm Bar

Spending afternoons here became a bit of a habit – for a sundowner. We had a couple of meals at the cafe and coffees in the morning. It was just a great spot to unwind and reflect on our day, and also listen to some live music. You don’t have to book ahead here.

5. Visit the art gallery

It was a welcome surprise to wander through the Art Gallery on site and speak with the resident artist. There’s lots of arts and gifts to buy, and we got some for ourselves and our families back home. It was nice to see pieces showcasing Indigenous and contemporary Kimberley artists, capturing the essence of this incredible region. Beautiful!

6. Treat yourself to a massage

It’s really not like camping or roughing it at all! El Questro has lots of things to do and enjoy – including a massage and other spa treatments. We couldn’t get in so you might need to book ahead. It would have been a well-earned indulgence that’s for sure.

7. Swim in natural rock pools

El Questro is dotted with stunning swimming holes. You don’t even have to leave the caravan park as there is a swimming hole on site.

Zebedee Springs is a favourite, offering warm, crystal-clear waters surrounded by towering Livistona palms.

Note, this spot closes at lunchtime, or it did when we were there. We were advised to go in the morning. It might be busy – but it’s worth a soak before setting off on your next adventure.

Make sure you check the signs as some do say on swimming due to crocs.

9. Sunset at Branco’s Lookout

We loved this one … bit of a drive to get up there (nothing too crazy if you’ve got a bit of four-wheeling experience.

One of the best sunset spots in the Kimberley, Branco’s Lookout with its panoramic views over the Pentecost River and stunning escarpments.

It’s worth bringing your nibbles to settle in and watch as the landscape glows in the golden light.

10. Soak in the thermal springs

A visit to Zebedee Springs is a must for those wanting to relax in a tropical oasis.

The natural thermal pools, surrounded by ancient palms, create a tranquil setting to soak away the dust from the day’s adventures.

Special section: The Gibb River Road Experience

We only got to experience a little piece of the Gibb River Road but it was enough to make us want to go back.

The very short part of the track (about three hours return) we got to experience was incredible.

Free camping at the Pentecost River

Hands down one of the best free camping spots in the Kimberley – and we’ve ever been to.

The banks of the Pentecost River provide a stunning backdrop for an overnight stay (or a few nights).

Watch the sunrise over the Cockburn Ranges while enjoying a campfire breakfast.

You can stay on both sides of the river, and you can drive all the way up. We found a beautiful grasst area right on the river. Be careful, there are crocs!

Get the ultimate Instagram-worthy drone shot

Of course, you can’t go to the Pentecost River and not get the bucket-list shot (a big moment for any 4×4 enthusiast).

Crossing the Pentecost River is an unforgettable experience.

You’ll likely do it a few times and everyone will be at the river’s edge to watch you capture the perfect drone shot of your vehicle making its way through the iconic river crossing with the rugged Kimberley backdrop behind you.

Ellenbrae Station’s famous scones

No Gibb River Road journey is complete without a stop at Ellenbrae Station.

Known for their freshly baked scones, served with jam and cream, this remote oasis is a welcome treat after a dusty day on the road.

You can also stay there, which we didn’t know about when we booked El Questro.

El Questro and the small part of the Gibb River Road that we did definitely offer some of the most unforgettable experiences in the Kimberley.

There really is something for every kind of traveller – we met families, international tourists, grey nomads, and young Aussie couples. We absolutely loved it.
