Part 2: Hanging out with Ben and Sally from Kimberley Dreaming
The East Kimberley – hands down one of the most beautiful places we’ve visited in all of Oz.
And we were lucky to hang out on Country with our friends Ben and Sally from Kimberley Dreaming tours as they showed us around their neck of the woods.
After we’d met up with Ben and Sally we travelled in tandem to Doon Doon, known for it’s roadhouse and caravan park, but there is also a community at the back.
There at the community, Sally’s sister, welcomed us to Country with a smoke ceremony and blessing.
This was Rafa’s first smoke ceremony and welcome. Ben and Sally also joined in the ceremony, a tradition that’s used to ward off bad spirits and keep you safe while on Indigenous land.
We were there we met Sal’s mum and some more of her family. Then it was on to a special place on Doon Doon Station that Ben and Sally had set up just for us – and there was no one for miles!
The first night we camped on the Dunham River and met with Sal’s brother who was on Country collecting seeds. It was dark by the time we got there so we built a fire, had some drinks and nibbles, and told some stories, before falling into a deep sleep – there’s something different about sleeping on Country.
Waking up the next day was pure heaven – so calm and serene, and it wasn’t long before Ben had taken Rafa barra fishing … his dream while on this Kimberley adventure.
They caught a few barras at that spot, which they had to let go as they were too small.
Don’t worry he didn’t leave the trip empty handed! The next two nights were spent at a camp Ben and Sally have set up to take tour groups to.
It was there Rafa got to catch a few big barras, which we had for dinner. We spent our time by the river, relaxing, walking and exploring, and fishing.
It was the ultimate on-Country experience, and we can’t wait to get back there with Ben and Sally!
