D180 Freestanding Awning
Big shade from a compact base – the Australian Made 180 awning for serious touring
Heading off grid or sneaking down the coast after work, you need shade that’s fast, solid, and built to last. The Destination4WD D180 freestanding awning delivers massive cover from a neat 2.2 m base, with extendable arms that swing out for real-world protection in Aussie conditions.
Why the D180 is Different
Most awnings chase a price point. The D180 was built for problem-free touring – fast to set up, truly freestanding in everyday conditions, and tough enough for years of trips.
Here’s what makes it unique:
- Compact 2.2 m base – a tidy fit on wagons, dual cabs, and vans without awkward overhang.
- Extendable arms to 2.9 m – swing out and slide to create a huge (12m²) usable footprint of shade.
- Freestanding simplicity – unzip, swing, click – set up solo in under a minute, no poles in typical conditions.
- Built tough – 4 mm stainless base, reinforced alloy arms, marine-grade hardware.
- All-weather Aussie canvas – Dynaproofed Outback Rugged Japara 260 g/sqm, UV and water resistant.
- Lightweight for its size – only 23 kg.
- Left or right fitment – pick driver or passenger side, plus choose swing to front or back to suit your setup.
- Serviceable and replaceable – buy once, maintain for decades with real support from our Cairns workshop.
- Made in Cairns, Australia – every awning is hand-built, tested, and backed by us.
Out on the road, the difference is obvious. Pull over for a roadside lunch and you’ll have instant shade without fussing with poles. Roll into camp after dark and it’s set up in under a minute, giving you space to cook, sort gear, or just relax. And when the weather turns, you know it’ll hold – because it’s been built and tested for the same Aussie conditions you’re heading into.
This is shade that keeps up with your adventures, trip after trip.
Made for 4WDs, Vans & Everything in Between
Running a Fortuner, LC300, Prado, or Y62 Patrol with a lift-up tailgate? The D180 is a natural fit – let your tailgate act as the rear wall while the awning protects the side. That means more usable cover, less gear to set up, and a seamless camp kitchen or fridge zone.
But it doesn’t stop there. The 180-degree opening makes it a brilliant option for the side of vans like the Toyota HiAce, Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, or VW Transporter – whether you’re a tradie needing quick shade on the job site, or building out a vanlife rig for weekends away.
We’ve also got customers running their D180s on caravans and hybrid campers, where it adds fast, freestanding shade without the bulk of a full annex.
In short – the D180 isn’t just an awning. It’s a super versatile shade solution that adapts to your vehicle, your setup, and your adventures.

What our customers say
Destination4WD D180 awning FAQs
Do I need poles?
No. The D180 is a true freestanding awning and sets up in under a minute. In gusty conditions or if you’ll leave it up unattended, add a guy rope and spring on the outer arm for extra safety.
What should I do if I leave the awning unattended or overnight?
Secure the outer arm with a guy rope and spring. Sudden gusts can exceed normal breezes and this simple step protects your awning and mounting points.
Will it fit my roof rack?
Yes – we have universal and vehicle-specific brackets for most racks. If you’re unsure, send us your rack details and we’ll confirm exactly what you need.
Driver or passenger side?
We offer both, and you can choose swing to front or swing to back to suit your vehicle and camp layout.
Is the canvas actually waterproof?
Yes. The Dynaproofed Outback Rugged Japara canvas is waterproof, UV-resistant, and treated against mould, bacteria, and algae.
How much shade do I really get?
Roughly 12 m² when deployed, thanks to the 2.9 m extendable arms and square-edge design that puts usable shade where you stand, cook, and work.
Which is better for me – 180 or 270?
If you’ve got a lift-up tailgate, a 180 often makes more sense. Use the tailgate as rear shelter and keep a big, open side space under the awning. Touring with drawers, fridge, or a rear kitchen under the tailgate is a great match.
What warranty comes with the D180?
24-month manufacturer warranty on workmanship and materials. Misuse and storm damage aren’t covered, but every part is serviceable so you can keep your awning working for the long haul.
Do you ship Australia-wide?
Yes. We ship across Australia and provide tracking after dispatch.
Can I add walls, sun cap, or lighting?
Yes. Add corner walls, wall panels, a sun cap for extra shade, and HardKorr tri-colour lighting to build out your camp the way you like it.
